Producing beautiful prints with big impact just got easier, thanks to a new firmware update enabling large-scale panoramic images to be printed on the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000.

With the professional desktop photo printer, you can print high-quality images up to A2, but the new update brings a wealth of further benefits – adding panoramic paper sizes to the driver, increasing the custom paper size limit, and launching a printing mode customised for Baryta paper.

Panoramic photo printing

Printer Firmware Update 3.010 offers increased scope for you to print photos at custom sizes to suit your individual work, and offers a notable improvement for panoramic image printing.

"If you're into landscapes, architecture or other panoramic photographs, this update will unlock features for you," says Canon printing expert Suhaib Hussain. "After updating the firmware, you'll find a specific custom size within the dropdown menu that will enable you to print a panoramic image in a landscape format."

The new size, 21cm x 59.4cm, represents an A2 sheet cut in half and is perfect for printing panoramic images. This setting has been designed to fit Hahnemühle paper – specifically Photo Rag® 308 and Photo Rag® Baryta – and will also make borderless printing possible.

Double-length paper options

Printer Firmware Update 3.010 also extends the custom paper size limit from 647.7mm to 1,200mm, meaning images can be printed on an even wider range of sizes.

"It now supports a longer paper size, which has almost doubled in length from when the printer was launched," says Suhaib. "This opens up possibilities for photographers to create different print types."

It also means you can potentially save money by arranging more images on a sheet of photo paper when printing, making more efficient use of your media.

New Baryta paper mode

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 printers can be loaded with a range of specialist papers to suit a variety of aesthetics. Adding to the available creative options, the latest update introduces a new mode to optimise printing quality when using Baryta paper – photographic paper that has been coated with barium sulphate to give greater definition and extended tonal ranges in printed images.

"This mode has been developed to reproduce the deepness in the reds and darker colours such as deep greens," says Suhaib. "It's really implanting the colours in that part of the colour gamut, while also reducing the effect of bronzing, which is sometimes associated with Baryta media. This mode will enhance the printer, so when it prints on that media type it's going to have less bronze and better colour finishing in dark areas."

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 printer offers high levels of colour and detail, which will be enhanced by selecting Baryta mode when printing on this paper. When sending images to print, a new paper type – Baryta – is now available to select in the menu alongside existing options such as glossy paper, fine art paper and heavyweight paper.

"In terms of quality, photographers producing prints with darker colours and using Baryta media will really see the benefits of the Baryta mode," says Suhaib. "You'll get an expanded colour gamut and better colour finish in darker areas of the print."

Further improved specifications include the addition of a No Colour Correction mode, an increase in the number of paper registrations in the printer from 25 to 35, plus enhanced security features.

The latest firmware update is available to download now. To update and access the features, first update your Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 printer to the latest firmware v3.010 using firmware updater tool v2.5.
