FAQ: What precautions should I take when connecting a camera to a computer running Windows XP?

Hasznos Információk:

Megoldás:

If your computer is running Windows XP, it is not necessary to install the software from the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk. You can simply connect the camera to the computer to import images. However, the following conditions and restrictions may apply.

  1. After connecting the camera to the computer, it takes several minutes before you are able to use it.
If the camera is not recognized by the computer after a long period of time, follow either of these procedures:
    • Download and install the WIA driver for Windows XP from Canon's download site, if it's available for your camera.
    • Most of our Digital Cameras don't need a WIA-driver for Windows XP anymore. They use a PTP-driver already integrated in the Windows XP-system. If there is no WIA-driver available for your camera and you have problems with the driver, please contact the operating system producer or the producer of your computer to solve the problem.

  2. You find that you cannot import images when there are a large number of them (around 1000 or more) stored in the camera.
In this case, follow the procedure below:
    • Use the software from the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk (e.g. ZoomBrowser EX) to import images.

  3. If Service Pack 1 (SP1) is not installed on your computer, it may not recognise the camera when connected via the USB cable.
In this case, follow any of the procedures below:
    • Disconnect the USB cable once, and then reconnect it.
    • Update your Windows XP system by installing SP1.
    • Use the software from the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk (e.g. ZoomBrowser EX) to import images.

  4. The following restrictions apply when importing RAW images.
    • If SP1 is installed:
      • RAW images cannot be imported via the Scanners and Cameras wizard. Please use Windows Explorer to import these images.
    • If SP1 is not installed:
      • RAW images cannot be imported. Also, if there are RAW images stored in the camera, it may prevent images in other formats from being downloaded.
    • However, both of the problems described above can be solved by following the procedure below:
      • Use the software from the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk (e.g. ZoomBrowser EX) to import images.

General precautions when connecting your camera to a computer with the USB cable:

  1. Confirm that the USB cable being used is the correct one and that it is securely connected to both the camera and the computer.

  2. The computer may not recognise the camera if it is connected via a USB hub, so please connect the camera directly to the computer.
  3. The connection may not work properly if other USB devices (excluding USB mouse and keyboard devices) are in use at the same time. If this occurs, disconnect the other devices from the computer and try reconnecting the camera.
  4. Do not connect two or more cameras to a single computer at the same time. The connections may not work if you do.
  5. Some computers may not recognise the camera due to incompatible USB ports (the part of the computer where the USB cable is plugged in). If this occurs, try connecting to another USB port.
  6. Operation may differ somewhat between models, so please refer to the Camera User Guide supplied with your camera.

Some cameras need to be powered on and set to Playback mode in order to connect to the computer. If they are not in this state, they may not be recognised.
